"purpose" driven life

Why does the author call this a "purpose" driven life? I've been looking at the first 3 chapter and I know I'm being critical but I can't help thinking that the author contradicts himself. In p.18 he states that may people try to use God for their own self-actualization but that we were made for God and not vice versa. He quotes Romans 8:6. On p.30 he states that nothing matters more than knowing God's purposes for our lives....that without purpose, life is trivial, petty and pointless.

My issue is that the author seems to be using God for self-actualization. He seems to want to know what God's purpose is for us without really spending a whole lot of time on having the readers spend time on getting to know God himself. In that sense, he seems to advocate God as a means to an end and not an end in Himself. I know that the book would be much longer and not as catchy if he spent time on having the reader get to know God and therefore, His purpose for us.....but isn't that the way it should be written given the authors own claims in this book?

If I sound hyper-critical, sorry....but that just jumped out at me.
